Peñaherrera-R., P., Ghia, T., Sherwood, D. & Gabriel, R. (2024a). New insights on male palpal bulb morphology in Cymbiapophysa Gabriel & Sherwood, 2020, with four new species from Ecuador (Araneae: Theraphosidae). Arachnology 19(7): 1003-1017. doi: 10.13156/arac.2024.19.7.1003Opis nových druhov Cymbiapophysa ashily sp. nov., C. matildeae sp. nov., C. otongachi sp. nov., a C. yumbos.Four new species of Cymbiapophysa Gabriel & Sherwood, 2020 from north-western Ecuador are described based on unique combinations of male palpal bulb and female spermathecae morphology: C. ashily sp. nov., C. matildeae sp. nov., C. oton- gachi sp. nov., and C. yumbos sp. nov. An updated diagnosis, key to species, and comparative plate of the male palpal bulb of previously known species, with relabelling of some keels as nec- essary, and evidence of a subapical keel in Cymbiapophysa species, are presented. Additionally, we provide further com- mentaries about cymbial morphology and male palpal bulb structures, and two possible hypotheses related to the origin of accessory keels.

Moeller, W., Galleti-Lima, A. & Guadanucci, J. P. L. (2024). New species of tarantulas from Brazil and notes on the Hapalopini tribe (Araneae, Theraphosidae, Theraphosinae). European Journal of Taxonomy 947: 53-87. doi: 10.5852/ejt.2024.947.2611Opis nových druhov Cyriocosmus paresi sp. nov., Hapalopus akroa sp. nov., H. guidonaesp. nov., a K. fukushimae.Abstract. The monophyly of Theraphosinae is supported by both morphological and molecular phylogenies. However, intergeneric relationships often show polytomies and branches with low support. A previous phylogenetic study proposed an intergeneric relationship for the subfamily based on molecular data and divided it into three tribes: Grammostolini, Hapalopini and Theraphosini. However, not all genera of Theraphosinae were sampled, and some relationships were inferred based on morphological similarities. Regarding the Hapalopini from Brazil, the relationships of some genera are still uncertain, such as Kochiana, Catanduba, and Munduruku. In this paper, we describe four new species of Hapalopini from Brazil: Cyriocosmus paresi sp. nov., Hapalopus akroa sp. nov., H. guidonae sp. nov., and K. fukushimae sp. nov. In addition, we propose an updated diagnosis for these three genera and for the species K. brunnipes and M. bicoloratum.

European Journal of Taxonomy 930: 229-248. doi: 10.5852/ejt.2024.930.2497Opis nového rodu Jambu plus druhy Jambu paru, Jambu manoa, Jambu (ex Hapalopus) butantan.Abstract. The genus Jambu gen. nov. is proposed based on two new species: Jambu paru gen. et sp. nov. and Jambu manoa gen. et sp. nov. Hapalopus butantan is transferred to Jambu; consequently, Jambu butantan gen. et comb. nov. is proposed. The geographic distribution of J. butantan is extended on the basis of new material collected. The new genus and the new species are here diagnosed, described and illustrated. The shape of the genitalia of Jambu resembles that of Hapalopini but differs from most of them by the presence of type IV urticating setae. The presence of this type of urticating setae allows us to hypothesize that this new genus is phylogenetically related with Grammostolini. Males of Jambu differ from those of other genera of Grammostolini by the presence of a paraembolic apophysis on the palpal bulb. Females also differ from those of other Grammostolini by the spermathecae morphology, with one medial lamp-shaped or heart-shaped receptacle. The homology of some features and the taxonomic placement of the new genus are discussed.

In the original description of Neostenotarsus scissistylus Tesmoingt & Schmidt, 2002, we found characters incongruent with N. guianensis, namely, the purported presence of serration on the prolateral keels of the palpal bulb; a narrower apical third of the embolus; the absence of a patch of bristles on the retrolateral face of the palpal tibia and of a baso-retrolateral protuberance on metatarsus I; and a shorter and more apically situated megaspine on the retrolateral branch of the tibial apophyses. The characters from its original description are discussed. N. scissistylus stat. rev. has been revalidated until such time as the type material, or topotypic material, can be examined by future workers.

We comment on the similarities in male palpal bulb morphology with other neotropical genera and provide a preliminary phylogenic placement based on morphology.

Ferretti, N., Nicoletta, M. & Soresi, D. S. (2024). An integrative taxonomy approach evaluates the limits of the widespread tarantula Plesiopelma longisternale (Araneae: Mygalomorphae: Theraphosidae) and reveals a new species from Argentina. Zoologischer Anzeiger 308: 131-143. doi: 10.1016/j.jcz.2023.12.003Nový druh Plesiopelma absconditus. Opísaná variabilita (polymorfizmus) Plesiopelma longisternale.Plesiopelma longisternale is a widespread tarantula in Argentina and its limit is difficult to determine due to their morphological variation among populations. Males are distinguishable by the following character combination: a field of spines on the apical half of the palpal tibia, a very long embolus and a field of spines on the reotrolateral face of cymbium; females are characterized by long spiraled ducts distant from each other. Here, we used mitochondrial DNA (cox1) to reconstruct the first phylogeny of P. longisternale, in combination with morpho- logical data and molecular species delimitation, to assess the taxonomic limits of this species. Our phylogenetic results confirm a close relationship among the populations from central Argentina and a new evolutionary in- dependent lineage identified as a new species, Plesiopelma absconditus, which is here diagnose, described and illustrated. We further analyzed the diagnostic characters of P. longisternale through the examination of the types and specimens from many populations and found that their morphological intraspecific variations largely overlap. Altogether, our results demonstrate that some of the variability of P. longisternale in central Argentina represent polymorphisms of a single species supported by molecular data. In addition, we discovered a new species from this genus distinguishable by molecular and morphological data and highlight the need for multiple lines of evidence to solve the taxonomic problems in species of tarantulas.

The new species are easily differentiated from other congeners of Psalmo- poeus by spermathecae and male palpal bulb morphology and a comparatively distant distribution to the type localities of the geographically nearest known congeners. The diagnosis of P. ecclesiasticus Pocock, 1093 is revised and updated, considering the nov- el species and observations on spermatheca of this species. Likewise, an evaluation is provided for the new species in terms of conservation due to the various threats impact- ing ecosystems and ecosystem services of their type localities. (♂, Ciego de Ávila prov.), T. citma sp. nov. (♀, Granma prov.), T.ABSTRACT. The spiders of the genus Trichopelma Simon, 1888 present in Cuba, are revised. Currently, the genus Trichopelma comprises 22 known species distributed in the Caribbean, and Central and the upper region of South America. Cuba currently hosts five valid species and, in this study, the descriptions of seven new species distributed throughout the island are presented: T. baracoense sp. nov. (♂♀, Guantanamo prov.), T. cheguevarai sp. nov. (♂, Ciego de Ávila prov.), T. citma sp. nov. (♀, Granma prov.), T. fidelcastroi sp. nov. (♂♀, Holguín prov.), T. granmense sp. nov. (♂♀, Granma prov.), T. rudloffi sp. nov. (♂♀, Holguín prov.) and T. soroense sp. nov. (♂♀, Artemisa prov.). Based on morphological characters, a cladistic analysis was performed, revealing the phylogenetic position of the new species compared to the species previously described. Based on this phylogeny, morphological characters and close proximity in distribution, T. banksia Özdikmen & Demir, 2012 syn. n., is proposed as a junior synonym of T. cubanum (Simon, 1903). The genus Thalerommata Ausserer, 1871 is reported from Cuba for the first time, with the description of T. anae sp. nov. (♂, Sancti Spíritus prov.).
fidelcastroi sp. nov. (♂♀, Holguín prov.), T. granmense sp. nov. (♂♀, Granma prov.), T.rudloffi sp. nov. (♂♀, Holguín prov.) a T. soroensesp. nov. (♂♀, Artemisa prov.).
T. banksia je považované za mladšie synonymum T. cubanum.
Rod Thalerommata objavený aj na Kube s novým druhom T. anae.

Ortiz, D. & Fonseca, E. O. (2024). A hairy giant among dwarves: Trichopelma grande, a distinct new species of tarantula from Cuba (Araneae: Theraphosidae). Journal of Natural History 58(45-48): 2189-2205. doi: 10.1080/00222933.2024.2401921Opis druhu Trichopelma grande.Large size, tropical climate, topographic complexity, and millions of years of isolation have turned the Greater Antillean islands into natural laboratories of evolution. Several groups have experienced explosive diversification across these islands, leading to highly diverse and endemic biotas and species experiencing unique adap- tations. Here we describe a new tarantula species from the Viñales area, a biodiversity hotspot in western Cuba. Despite being a middle-sized species with large projected setae on the legs, reminiscent of those in arboreal tarantulas, phylogenomic analysis, diagnostic morphological features, and trap-door retreat building behaviour identifies it as the largest known representative of Trichopelma, and the only one with such hirsute legs. We provide mitochondrial barcoding data and a database of ultraconserved elements loci of the holotype of this species, which will help to include it in future phylogenetic studies of Theraphosidae. Given its limited distribution range, and its apparent absence in natural history collections despite its distinct appearance, this species might be scarce, positioning it as a potential conservation concern.

As the type specimens do not fit the diagnostic characters of Homoeomma Ausserer, 1871, especially because of the different palpal bulb morphology in males and the shape of spermathecae in females, H. peruvianum (Chamberlin, 1916) was transferred into the newly established genus Urupelma gen. n., which is herein described, diagnosed and illustrated. Eleven new species of Urupelma gen. n. (U. sanctitheresae sp. n., U. sanctimariae sp. n., U. awanqay sp. n., U. ashaninka sp. n., U. atarraz sp. n., U. megantonianum sp. n., U. machiguenga sp. n., U. pampas sp. n., U. johannae sp. n., U. veronicae sp. n., and U. dianae sp. n.) are herein described, diagnosed and illustrated. The monophyly of Urupelma gen. n. is supported by a molecular phylogenetic analysis focused on the tarantulas with urticating setae of type III and III+IV and based on three genes: the nuclear 18S and 28S, and the mitochon- drial COI gene. Apart from the support of the new genus and some existing valid genera, the molecular phylogeny also sheds light on the dynamic evolutionary history behind the adaption to high montane environments in tarantulas.

These taxa rep- resent new distributional records for the genus and suggest a potential trans-Andean speciation pathway for Andean thera- phosids. Furthermore, four species of Psalmopoeus Pocock, 1895 previously synonymized by Cifuentes & Bertani (2022) without sufficient justification and without examination of type specimens, are reinstated based on morphological and distribu- tional evidence: Psalmopoeus intermedius Chamberlin, 1940 stat. rest. from Panama is removed from an incorrect synonymy with P. reduncus (Karsch, 1880) from Costa Rica; P. copanensis Gabriel & Sherwood, 2020 stat. rest. from Honduras, P. pete- nensis Gabriel & Sherwood, 2020 stat. rest. from Guatemala, and P. sandersoni Gabriel & Sherwood, 2020 stat. rest. from Belize are all removed from incorrect synonymy with P. victori Mendoza, 2014 from Mexico. Psalmopoeus maya Witt, 1996 is validated as a legitimate name and not a nomen nudum, as erro- neously claimed by Cifuentes & Bertani (2022), though it remains a species inquirenda. Two new species, P. drolshageni sp. nov. and P. zombie sp. nov., are described based on previ- ously published but misidentified material. Notes are provided on Psalmopoeus ecclesiasticus Pocock, 1903 sensu stricto. (type species) with male and female, A. petropolis gen. nov. sp. nov. with male, A. minor gen. nov. sp. nov., with male, A. giganteus gen. nov. sp. nov. with male and female, and A. maculatus gen. nov. sp. nov. with both male and female. Eupalaestrus spinosissimus Mello-Leitão, 1923 is transferred to Arboriticus gen. nov., making the new combination A. spinosissimus (Mello-Leitão, 1923). Eupalaestrus tarsicrassus Bücherl, 1947 is removed from the synonymy with Eupalaestrus spinosissimus and transferred to Arboriticus gen. nov. making the new combination A. tarsicrassus (Bücherl, 1947). The male of A. tarsicrassus is described for the first time. Pamphobeteus holophaeus Mello-Leitão, 1923 is removed from the synonymy with Eupalaestrus spinosissimus, transferred to Vitalius Lucas, Silva Junior & Bertani, 1993, and considered a junior synonym of Vitalius dubius (Mello-Leitão, 1923). The new genus is supported by phylogenetic evidence based on morphological and behavioral characters. The basal position of the genus in the available cladogram, along with its diverse morphology, indicates that Arboriticus gen. nov. species diverged early during the evolution of an important clade of theraphosines in Brazil and may represent relict populations. The most striking feature of these species is their arboreal habit, which is unusual among theraphosines. Due to the endemism of these species in heavily impacted and deforested regions formerly covered by the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, their arboreal nature, and the rarity of specimens, the species of Arboriticus gen. nov. can be considered threatened, and conservation efforts for their protection are strongly recommended.

Herein, the type specimens are reexamined with newly collected samples of currently known Orphnaecus species, including new specimens from Romblon Island, Philippines. Morphological and molecu- lar analyses were performed, utilizing cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and ribosomal genes (12S–tRNA-Val–16S). Synapomorphies in the structure of maxillary lyra, spermathecae, and male palpal morphology were observed in O. philippinus and the Romblon specimen which are distinct from other Orphnaecus species. In addition, lyrate morphology, setae structure on the patella of palp dorsal, and the male palpal organ morphology of O. dichro- matus differ from other Orphnaecus species. Cladistic separation observed in molecular phylogenetic analyses supports morphological observations. Our findings suggest that the genus Selenobrachys is distinct from Orphnaecus; hence, the genus Selenobrachys Schmidt, 1999, stat. rev. and its type species Selenobrachys philippinus Schmidt, 1999, comb. rest., are restored and the new species from Romblon Island, Selenobrachys us- tromsupasius sp. nov., be identified as the second Selenobrachys species. Furthermore, the genus Chilocosmia Schmidt & von Wirth, 1992, stat. rev. and the original combina- tion of its type species, Chilocosmia dichromata Schmidt & von Wirth, 1992, comb. rest. are restored. Male specimens of S. philippinus and C. dichromata were described for the first time. Insights on the biogeography of Philippine tarantulas are discussed.

A new species of Guyruita Guadanucci, Lucas, Indicatti & Yamamoto, 2007, Guyruita tepequem sp. nov. is described based on a male from the State of Roraima. It differs from all other Guyruita species by the male palp having the bulb embolus with a distal torsion and the color pattern with an ovoid large clear spot on the center of the abdomen dorsum. A new species of Jambu Miglio, Perafán & Pérez-Miles, 2024, Jambu yanomami sp. nov., is herein described based on male and female from the State of Amazonas, Brazil. Jambu yanomami sp. nov. differs from those of all other congeners by the male palp lacking a paraembolic apophysis on the ring-shaped keel and a short embolus, whereas the female is unique in the spermathecae having two separate receptacles. After examining the female holotype of Proshapalopus variegatus Caporiacco, 1955, presently included in Hapalopus Ausserer, 1875, we transfer the species to Chromatopelma Schmidt, 1995 and consider it a junior synonym of Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens Strand, 1907.

The type species of Citharognathus, C. hosei Pocock, 1895, is redescribed based on the type specimen and new samples from two populations of Sarawak, Borneo. The males of M. tongmianensis gen. nov. comb. nov., and C. hosei are additionally described. Insights into natural history and conservation of all species are included. A distribution map for both Magnacrus species is provided.

The new species from Ecuador provides further knowledge on the male palpal bulb and spermathecal morphology of Reversopelma, supporting the delimitation of a new genus: Vitriemboli gen. nov. (type species Vitriemboli diaguita sp. nov.), easily distinguished from Reversopelma by the presence of urticating setae types III and IV. The Bolivian species Reversopelma herzogi Gabriel, Sher- wood & Pérez-Miles, 2023 is transferred to Vitriemboli (Vitri- emboli herzogi comb. nov.) based on urticating setae and male palpal bulb morphology. A second new genus, Colombiarachne gen. nov. (type species Colombiarachne dianae sp. nov.), dis- covered separately, is described from Colombia.

Briggs, E. J., Foley, S. & Cook, L. G. (2025). Gondwanan relic or recent arrival? The biogeographic origins and systematics of Australian tarantulas. Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 204(108246): 1-16. doi: 10.1016/j.ympev.2024.108246Selenocosmia stalkeri už nie je sysnonymum pre Selenocosmia stirlingi. The composition of Australia’s fauna and flora has been largely assembled by two biogeographic processes, vicariance and long-distance dispersal and establishment. These patterns can be observed today through the survival of Gondwanan lineages contrasted with relatively recent colonization from south-east Asia, respectively. In general, the post-Gondwanan immigrant lineages from south-east Asia are taxa with traits that facilitate dispersal. Consequently, taxa like tarantulas (Araneae, Theraphosidae) that are largely pan-tropical but also have a low propensity for dispersal, are thought to be Gondwanan in origin. However, the Australian tarantulas are unsampled for phylogenomic studies and, as such, their classification and biogeographic origins have been long debated and are unresolved. Here we test if their current, morphology-based classification in Selenocosmiinae is accurate and assess whether the Australian tarantulas were present in Australia while it was part of Gondwana. We sample 369 tarantula specimens from across Australia, greatly expanding the geographic sampling of pre- vious studies, to develop the first continent-wide phylogeny of the Australian tarantulas. To resolve the ‘back bone’ of the Australian tarantula phylogeny we generate 20 new transcriptomes for species of Australian tarantulas representing distinct lineages uncovered using mitochondrial sequence data and combine these new transcriptomes with published transcriptomic data. Through the recovery of ultra-conserved element (UCE) loci from transcriptomes and testing multiple data occupancy matrices, we find that the Australian clade is mono- phyletic and nested inside the largely Asian Selenocosmiinae. We find the Australian fauna are a relatively young radiation with a crown age of 18.8–8.3 Ma and we therefore reject the hypothesis of a Gondwanan origin for these animals and, instead, infer a recent dispersal from south-east Asia. Our findings indicate that they un- derwent a rapid radiation, possibly coinciding with their arrival into Australia. Our findings refute the monophyly of Selenocosmia and Coremiocnemis as currently recognised, and we remove Selenocosmia stalkeri from synonymy with Selenocosmia stirlingi.

Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 205(3, zlaf152): 1-24. doi: 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlaf152Nový rod Tandayarachne + druhy Tandayarachne pijaos (ex Neischnocolus), Tandayarachne sherwoodae. This study presents the first comprehensive morphology-based phylogenetic analysis encompassing all described species of Cymbiapophysa Gabriel and Sherwood, 2020. We provide an updated and refined phylogenetic hypothesis that resolves relationships among closely related taxa and supports the recognition of a new theraphosid clade. Preliminary analysis of this clade suggests that unconventional characters of the male palpal bulb may have untapped potential for generic-level differentiation within Theraphosidae. Further, the recovered topologies support the recognition of a new genus, Tandayarachne gen. nov. The new genus is composed of a new species from the Tandayapa Cloud Forest Station, Western Ecuador, and a previously misplaced species of Neischnocolus Petrunkevitch, 1925 from Colombia. Notably, the paratype female of the latter species is reassigned to Neischnocolus and proposed here as a new species based on distinct spermathecal morphology. Integrating our phylogenetic hypothesis with character optimization and ancestral character state reconstruction, we identify evolutionary trends in keel-nested characters, further providing support for genera delimitation on the studied clade. We discuss the current impediments facing the taxonomy of the subfamily Theraphosinae, with a specific focus on the underestimation of proper morphological analysis of the palpal bulbs in taxonomic assessments. Finally, we discuss the geographical distribution of the new genus and propose plausible scenarios to explain its disjunct distribution.

Arthropoda Selecta 34(1): 121-160. doi: 10.15298/arthsel.34.1.10ABSTRACT. An annotated checklist of non-native spiders historically and contemporaneously known to have been accidently imported into the United Kingdom is given, a total of 35 families, 103 genera, and 131 spe- cies are accepted for the checklist. New records, based on material sent to the author over the last decade and further historical museum specimens examined, comprise 35 newly recorded species. Of these, three also represent the first records of their respective genera, and two the first records of their respective families. Five new taxo- nomic acts are proposed: Clubiona facilis O. Pickard- Cambridge, 1911, stat. rev. (Clubionidae); Bolostromus suspectus O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1911, nomen dubium (Cyrtaucheniidae); Lathys lepida O. Euathlus ameghinoi sp. n. and Euathlus ventus sp. n. are the first records for the Patagonian Steppe. Here we used mitochondrial DNA (cox1) to perform the first molecular phylogeny of some representatives of the genus. In addition, we present the first description of the sexual behaviour of the genus. Both molecular and cladistic morphological analysis showed the genus Euathlus as monophyletic, and new species were recovered as sister groups. New species show new morphological variations of typical characters for the genus (e.g. tibial apophyses and palpal organs).

Through a combination of cladistic, molecular, and morphological analyses, three new species are described: Euathlus basalticus sp. nov. from Neuquén, Euathlus kupal sp. nov. from Mendoza, and Euathlus susanae sp. nov. from the La Pampa-Mendoza provinces. Addition- ally, the female of Euathlus tenebrarum Ferretti, 2015 is described for the first time, revealing that the previously attributed female of this species belongs to E. basalticus sp. nov. Phylogenetic trees from both morphological and molecular datasets are presented. Preliminary molecular analyses reveal the identity and support the proposal of the species treated here. Morphological analyses found considerable diversity within Euathlus, particularly in genitalic structures, challenging the general assumption of morphological homogeneity among mygalomorph spiders. Cladistic analyses recovered the genus Phrixotrichus within Euathlus, though this hypothesis could not be tested with molecular data due to the lack of available sequences for Phrixotrichus. These results suggest that future taxonomic revisions may be complemented once molecular data become available. Altogether, our results provide new insights into the systematics and diversity of Euathlus and highlight the importance of integrative approaches for unraveling evolu- tionary relationships within this group.

Two consistent topologies were obtained with a concavity = 10.541, resulting from a sensitivity analysis. Both cladograms suggest Hapalotremus as monophyletic. Hapalotremus synapomorphies are females with spermathecae consisting in a single oval receptacle and tibia of the first pair of legs of males very short. Hapalotremus is composed of 15 species including a new species: Hapalotremus munaycha sp. nov. This new species was found to be the sister species of H. vilcanota and is distributed in central Peru at elevations about 4000 m.a.s.l. on interandean valleys. The new species distinguishes from the other known species of the genus by the intense white color on legs, carapace and cheliceae, together with a male palpal bulb carrying a slightly developed prolateral superior keel and the subapical keel ending with two very small teeth. Also, females of Hapalotremus munaycha sp. nov. are characterized by the spermathecae with very wide basal portion and small apical projections pointing upwards

The holotypes of both species are redescribed, and the female of G. australis is described for the first time. Diagnoses of these species are also provided. Phylogenetic analyses recovered G. inermis as a distinct lineage from G. australis, suggesting that both species are more closely related to Brazilian and Uruguayan species of the genus Grammostola Simon, 1892, than to other Argentinean species. Similarly, Chilean species appear distinct from other Grammostola species, indicating that the Andes act as a geographical barrier.

A continental-wide disjunction displayed by unrelated plant taxa across Afro-Arabia (the RAND flora pattern) has been traditionally explained as a consequence of late Miocene aridification of the region and the formation of the Sahara Desert. We implement genomic data (UCE), divergence time estimation and biogeographic analyses to uncover the origins of RAND pattern distribution in dwarf tarantula genus Ischnocolus Ausserer, 1871. The results suggest that the disjunct distribution of Ischnocolus resulted from ecological vicariance driven by the Middle Miocene climate cooling, predating the timing of the aridification of the region. Our results thus bring evidence of phylogeographic discordance of the RAND pattern origins among different taxa. Conserved lifestyle and the preference for humid environments among the early diverging Ischnocolus lineages also suggest that dispersal across Afro-Arabia was likely catalyzed by interspecific competitive exclusion. Subsequent lifestyle switches, that enabled the dwarf tarantulas to successfully colonize dry environments, evolved repeatedly in the group’s evolution. Additionally, we delimit the boundaries of the genus Ischnocolus and assess its position within the tarantula phylogeny. As a consequence, we revalidate the genus Luphocemus Denis, 1960, which is endemic to North Africa.

Size matters: a new genus of tarantula with the longest male palps, and an integrative revision of Monocentropus Pocock, 1897 (Araneae, Theraphosidae, Eumenophorinae). ZooKeys 1247: 89-126. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.1247.162886 Na velikosti záleží (už aj u pavúkovA taxonomic revision of the eumenophorine tarantula genus Monocentropus Pocock, 1897, which currently comprises three species, M. balfouri Pocock, 1897 (♂♀; Socotra, Yemen), M. lambertoni Fage, 1922 (♂♀; Madagascar), and M. longimanus Pocock, 1903 (♂♀; Yemen), is presented. By integrating both morphological data and a molecular phy- logeny based on mitochondrial (cox1) and nuclear (28S, 18S) markers, the genus is here- in redefined to include only the type species, M. balfouri. A new genus, Satyrex Zamani & von Wirth, gen. nov., is established to comprise S. longimanus comb. nov., along with four new species from the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa described herein: S. arabicus Zamani & von Wirth, sp. nov. (♂; Saudi Arabia), S. ferox Zamani, von Wirth & Stockmann, sp. nov. (♂♀; Yemen, Oman), S. somalicus Zamani & von Wirth, sp. nov. (♂; Somaliland), and S. speciosus Zamani, von Wirth & Just, sp. nov. (♂♀; Somaliland). The new genus is partially characterised by possessing the longest male palps known in tarantulas, possibly functioning in cannibalism avoidance during mating. Both the mo- lecular phylogeny and morphological characters suggest that M. lambertoni is probably not congeneric with M. balfouri, and also indicate that multiple species may be currently subsumed under the former name. Therefore, M. lambertoni is regarded as incerta sedis pending further studies to clarify its taxonomic placement, as it is also considered to represent a species complex. Finally, the distribution of all studied taxa is discussed within a biogeographic framework.
Nový rod Satyrex, kde presunuli Satyrex longimanus (ex Monocentropus), nové druhy Satyrex somalicus, Satyrex speciosus, Satyrex ferox, Satyrex arabicus.
Monocentropus lambertoni pravdepodobne nepatrí do rodu Monocentropus a jeho zaradenie má byť predmetom ďalšieho výskumu.

European Journal of Taxonomy 1022: 19-50. doi: 10.5852/ejt.2025.1022.3079Nové druhy Neischnocolus moraspungo, N. samonellaacademy, N. tiputini.Abstract. We reassess the palpal bulb morphology and taxonomy of Neischnocolus Petrunkevitch, 1925 based on the examination of several types of previously described species and the description of three new species (N. moraspungo Cisneros-Heredia, Peñaherrera-R., Guerrero-Campoverde, León-E., Gabriel & Sherwood sp. nov., N. samonellaacademy Peñaherrera-R., León-E., Guerrero-Campoverde, Gabriel, Sherwood & Cisneros-Heredia sp. nov., and N. tiputini Guerrero-Campoverde, Peñaherrera-R., León-E., Gabriel, Sherwood & Cisneros-Heredia sp. nov.) from Ecuador. A new keel structure is named and herein considered as a valid diagnostic feature for the genus, previously identified as a prolateral inferior keel. The rest of the keel identification of Neischnocolus is also relabelled in concordance with Bertani’s (2000) keel homology hypothesis. Amended diagnoses of almost all the species are provided, leaving only Neischnocolus obscurus (Ausserer, 1875) since the type material has not been located.

Revisiting and rediscovering the tarantulas (Araneae, Theraphosidae) of Culapnitan (Libmanan) Caves in the Philippines: troglomorphism, taxonomy, phylogeny and ecological niche. Subterranean Biology 52: 143-186. doi: 10.3897/subtbiol.52.142334Reopis Orphnaecus pellitus.Abstract In 1892, French naturalist Eugène Simon described samples of cave-dwelling tarantula species collected from Culapnitan Caves in the Philippines, a cave system that is now part of the present-time Libmanan Caves Nat- ural Park (LCNP). One of these is the new monotypic tarantula genus and species of that time, Orphnaecus pellitus Simon, 1892. Based on Simon’s notes and quick observation of the eyes of the syntypes, this species is highly suspected to be troglobitic. In the present study, we rediscovered O. pellitus from its reported site and investigated its troglobitic characteristics. Morphological analysis of O. pellitus shows troglomorphic characteristics which include reduced eye size, attenuated limbs, shortened tactile setae, and diminishing pig- mentation. Tolerance to hypoxia and heightened sensitivity to ground movements are the other subterranean adaptations that were observed. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a cladistic relationship among tarantula mor- phologically identified from the genus Orphnaecus. Our findings provide evidence that O. pellitus is a true troglobitic tarantula reported worldwide, and currently the only one known from Asia. We also report two new species of Orphnaecus, Orphnaecus libmanan sp. nov. and the dwarf Orphnaecus tangcongvaca sp. nov., collected from the forest grounds of the LCNP. The ecological niche differentiation of theraphosid species in the LCNP is also provided. Our findings are supported by morphology, molecular phylogeny, and ecology.

A new species of Southeast Asian dwarf tarantula in the genus Phlogiellus Pocock, 1897, from Lao PDR (Theraphosidae, Selenocosmiinae). ZooKeys 1247: 19-43 & Suppl. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.1247.155398Nový druh Phlogiellus khampheng.A new species of Southeast Asian dwarf tarantula, Phlogiellus khampheng Sriranan, Songsangchote & Chomphuphuang, sp. nov., is described from Pakse, Champasack Province, Lao PDR. The species is placed within the Yamia group of the genus Phlo- giellus, which is characterized by the absence of maxillary lyra. Phlogiellus khampheng Sriranan, Songsangchote & Chomphuphuang, sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species within the Yamia group by the unique morphology of the female spermathecae and the male embolus. The habitat and natural history of P. khampheng Sriranan, Song- sangchote & Chomphuphuang, sp. nov. are also discussed, with specimens found in mixed deciduous forests near Pakse, Lao PDR, inhabiting various microhabitats such as soil walls, under rocks, and within tree hollows. An updated comparison of scopu- la characteristics and labial cuspule counts across Phlogiellus species highlights the variability of these traits and their limitations as diagnostic features. Molecular phylogenetic analyses and species delimitation methods (ABGD and ASAP) further support the recognition of P. khampheng Sriranan, Songsangchote & Chomphuphuang, sp. nov. as a distinct species.

Both specimens were collected at the type locality or very close to it to assure to be conspecific. The female of P. paganoi can be distinguished from congeners by the high number of labial and maxillary cuspules and the shape of the spermathecae with very short and non-spiraled ducts. The female of T. crassifemur is characterized by the shape of the spermathecae and the absence of spiniform setae on coxa III and IV. New diagnoses and a distribution map for both species are presented.

The Theraphosidae species P. longisternale and P. roseum are considered sister species and the main diagnostic character to distinguish them is the sternum length. We tested the significance of this character in distinguishing these two species using the landmark-based analysis to explore the sternum morphometric variations. Our results showed that sternum shape variations between P. longisternale and P. roseum are continuous and can be differentiated by the width x length ratio, although they are associated with other diagnostical characters, as the size of the branches of the tibial apophysis and the palpal bulb subapical keel.

Zoologischer Anzeiger 319: 31-40. doi: 10.1016/j.jcz.2025.08.007 Pár poznámok o rodu Sickius (rod kde sú samice bez spermatéky).Sickius Soares & Camargo, 1948 is a monotypic genus (Sickius longibulbi) characterized by a broad geographic distribution across Brazil and conservative morphology. Notably, females lack spermathecae, and males possess palpal bulb with a long embolus, both traits with taxonomic importance. The genus belongs to the infraorder Mygalomorphae, a group with intricate taxonomic challenges due to uniform morphology, complicating species delimitation. In the present study, we employed an integrative taxonomic approach, combining mitochondrial DNA sequences of the Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene with Fourier Elliptical Analysis of the male palpal bulb shape to investigate lineage differentiation and evolutionary patterns within the genus Sickius. We observed genetic structured populations along with morphometric variation and geographic distribution, except for the two lineages localized in northeast Cerrado. We retain S. longibulbi as a single species with great diversity and possibly undergoing a process of divergence. Future studies with larger sample sizes are encouraged to confirm these findings and further investigate the evolutionary history of the genus.

Zootaxa 5660(1): 102-110. doi: 10.11646/zootaxa.5660.1.6Nový druh Typhochlaena chapadensis. The genus Typhochlaena C. L. Koch, 1850 comprises five species of tiny arboreal theraphosids found exclusively in Brazil. Some species have a colored, eye-catching pattern which make them an object of desire to the pet market, and two species were included in the Red Book of Threatened Brazilian Fauna by the Brazilian government. Typhochlaena was recovered as the sister group of the remaining aviculariines in phylogenetic analyses, as the genus retains several plesiomorphies and represents a distinct and old divergent clade. Therefore, it is important to obtain information about their species concerning distribution, habits and biology to aid in protecting their populations and species. Herein, we describe Typhochlaena chapadensis sp. nov., from the Brazilian State of Bahia, in the Chapada Diamantina region. The new species is closely related with T. curumim Bertani, 2012 but can be distinguished by the shape of the male palpal bulb, color pattern and geographic distribution.

In the same jar were two adult female specimens, collected at the same location in 1914, which Gravelly 1917 had identified as Melopoeus Pocock 1895 – a genus which, by September 2001, was deemed to be (by Raven 1985) a junior synonym of Haplopelma Simon 1892. Both of these specimens can still be found in the National Zoological Collection of the Zoological Survey of India (NZC-ZSI) collection.

Spiders from the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve of Souss-Massa region (Morocco), and descriptions of two new species (Arachnida: Araneae: Gnaphosidae, Salticidae). European Journal of Taxonomy 1051: 1-50. doi: 10.5852/ejt.2026.1051.3261 Info o Ischnocolus mogadorensis.Abstract. This study presents a preliminary faunistic survey of spiders from the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco covering 39 species across 17 families collected between January 2022 and June 2025. Two species are new to science: Cesonia africana Lecigne & Ouakri sp. nov. and Menemerus currens Lecigne sp. nov. Five other species are new records for Morocco, i.e., Nemesia uncinata Bacelar, 1933, Phlegra yaelae Prószyński,1998, Mogrus sahariensis Berland & Millot, 1941, Cebrennus laurae Jäger, 2014 and Polenecia producta (Simon, 1873). Several other species, already known from Morocco, are noteworthy taxa, e.g., Aelurillus hirtipes Denis, 1960, Cebrennus rungsi Jäger, 2000, Eresus elhennawyi Řezáč, Vaněk & Střeštík, 2023, Oecobius machadoi Wunderlich, 1995, Olios pictus (Simon, 1885) and Steatoda ingeae Van Keer, 2024. The following new synonym is proposed: Zelotes oryx (Simon, 1880) = Zelotes tragicus (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1872) syn. nov. Our findings expand our knowledge of Moroccan spiders and highlight the biodiversity of historically poorly studied habitats, thus warranting further, targeted research.

Closely related taxa frequently display high phenotypic similarity, which limits the resolution of morphology‐based approaches. In this study, we conducted the most extensive morphometric analysis to date within Theraphosidae, with the objective of explicitly testing how much morphological information is retained within the Lasiocyano sazimai and Lasiodora lineage. We applied a morphometric framework combining linear morphometry and geometric morphometry, including multivariate statistics, discriminant analyses, and cross‐validation, to evaluate interspecific differentiation in this group. Although some analyses recovered statistically significant differences among taxa, extensive morphological overlap, high intraspecific variation, and pronounced overfitting in cross‐validated classifications consistently reduced the discriminatory power of the methods. As a result, none of the approaches provided reliable diagnostic separation between Lasiocyano sazimai and Lasiodora species. Our results indicate that morphology alone reaches clear limits of resolution within this lineage. The only characters that remained consistently informative for distinguishing the genera were the presence of stridulatory setae in Lasiodora and the distinctive blue‐purplish setae of Lasiocyano. By explicitly testing the limits of morphometric and morphological inference in a mor- phologically conservative group, this study helps clarify the actual scope and limitations of morphology‐based systematics in Theraphosidae.
